Owlstone Inc. Awarded Next Generation Chemical Detector (NGCD) Phase I for the US DOD’s JPEO-CBD

Norwalk, CT, January 29 2015: Owlstone Inc., previously awarded a contract for the US Department of Defense’s (DOD) Next Generation Chemical Detector (NGCD) program, announced today it has been notified that the Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense (JPEO-CBD) will exercise its first option under the NGCD contract. After completing the initial testing, Owlstone has received formal approval to commence Phase I development under the NGCD program. JPEO-CBD’s NGCD program is funding a new family of products capable of detecting a wide variety of chemical warfare agents (CWAs). Under the multimillion-dollar contract, Owlstone will add new features to NGCD, its advanced chemical detection (CD) platform, while reducing size and weight and increasing power to deliver the highest level of sensitivity and selectivity ever achieved in a portable, self-contained unit.

Phase I in the multiyear, three-phase program will explore project feasibility, seeking to determine the scientific, technical, and commercial merit of the project. In this regard, future CD solutions will need to readily adapt to future changes on the chemical threat horizon and accommodate massive quantities of data. Incorporating Owlstone’s proprietary technology, the NGCD will be able handle “libraries” of information to address the tremendous data potential of diverse military threats and it will outperform past performance metrics in size, selectivity, sensitivity, power consumption, and response time.
